Handgun sales

So I think it's time to get a handgun. Does anyone know of a shooting range or shop that demos the guns so I can shoot many different ones and choose the one that best fits our needs?? The big push is to avoid the asinine taxes that will be imposed upon them come the first of the year. Plus, I've always wanted one for home protection because a shotgun makes too much of a mess.

Looking for suggestions as well. Not real familiar with handguns and I don't want to spend a fortune, just a descent all around handgun. Thanks!

Shotguns may make a mess but I would love to see how well you shoot say a 9mm after being woke up from a slumber sleep ---- with a shotgun you dont have to have that great of an aim to start with -- plus shotguns are alot cheeper! Mine stays beside my bed and I feel sorry for anyone who comes in our house unwelcome -- cause I surely can shoot it and not miss!

if there was ever a time to go out and buy the gun you've wanted to buy.. this is definetly it. that being said, if somebody busts into my house, i'm going to be more concerned with seeing to it that they can't testify than making a mess. for home protection, a short barreled 12ga with 00 buck is where it's at. for the car, a small revolver can be had relatively cheaply.

a 357 mag , you can shot 38 specials for target practice , get glazer safety slugs for home defense and best thing about a revolver, no wondering if safety on, is bullet in barrel, where is the clip etc. just point and squeeze

I went and looked at Gander Mtn. at some used S&M .45

All the ones I was looking at were around $500

"A Place to Shoot" on Moorison Road has a shooting range and sell guns. I have not been there in years but I am pretty sure the range is still open. The best buys on guns are generally at the gun show which are the first weekend of every month usually at the Freeman Coliseum.

I like double action revolvers myself, a 357mag is preference for a handgun for personal defense. Top of the line are S&W, colt, ruger. A cheaper one would be tarus.

And a word of advice -- Carrying a handgun in the driver or passenger compartment of an automobile in Texas is a felony unless you have a concealed carry permit or you meet the judges interpretation of traveling". If the pistol is in the trunk or in the tool box in the bed of the truck, then you are OK. Vehicle like Blazers fall into the grey area. You might get into trouble with a handgun even it is stored next to the spare tire on a blazer or bronco. A lawyer brought all this to everyones attention during an NRA event a few years back.

OK, so I've got a couple suggestions, the gun show and the target range on Moorison rd. Thanks guys!

You make some good points about a shotgun vs a handgun for home defense, I'm just not sure my wife wants to keep a gun next to the bed. We did a couple times when the copters with search lights were over the neighborhood. I just use home brew steel shot that I have left over from a goose hunt. Anyway, still want a handgun because now is the time. I'm with ya dubbyx.

BTW "A Place to Shoot" is on Pleasanton Rd. just south of 410. I may have to see what I can find there.

Just a FYI during the concelead carry course I took. The instructor made it a point to mention to only use factory ammunition for carry and home defense. Made the point that a lawyer could use it against you in case anything ever happened. Lawyer can make the case that the person is a crazed lunatic bent on hurting people. Made sense to me.

Thanks for the heads up, but it DOES NOT make sense to me how anyone intruding in my home or my property to steal/hurt ANYTHING has ANY rights.
Factory 00 buck it is then... Really, I hope I never have to use it in that respect, but rest assured I will!

I agree, sad there has to ba a law saying you CAN protect yourself, property, and family.

But hey, Obomination with a liberal house, senate, and media can make ALL your rights go away.

Can not remember what city it happened in but remember the big court battle about the guy shooting a robber in his niehbors yard?

Well that set a presedence.

In Texas now if you have a writen and signed letter from your niehbor you can shoot an intruder on there property.

As far as choosing a firearm you better get everything you have ever dreamed about now! After Jan. 20th we are all screwed as far as 2nd amendment rights go.

Here is a list of what evey American should go buy right now.

Assult rifle (AR-15)
Long range rifle (aka large cal. hunting rifle)
Shotgun (various styles and guages)
Pistols (all kinds)
At the very least 1,000 rounds for every item purchased

Disarmed citizens are no longer citizens they become subjects.

Shoot gun is less likely to go through multiple walls in your home making it a better choice for home defence. Blasting a pistol in your house you run the chance of shooting others in your home or even close by houses. So to answer your quastion you need both.

i agree with vicsjeep, you need both... depending on where you live double 00 buck may be a bit too much... i know that even that will go through mobile home walls... get a 12 gauge and a ruger sp 101... the ruger is an outsatanding snub nosed perfect for conceal and it fires factory 375 mag... or 38 special... you can get the hammerless version so you don't have to worry about that if you want... the revolver is easier for the wife though... no brainer... just point and shoot..

My wife's pretty gun saavy. IN fact, it was her Dad who really got me into shooting at all. I am going to a gun show this weekend, so we'll see. I was also told to spend some time on gunbroker.com to see what some of the guns are going for and to know what a good price is.

So what's the difference between double action and dual action?? I need to find a pistol 101 website.
