More Diesel questions RE: emmisions

First of all, I only drive this truck about 5000 miles a year, where it get used to tote my bronco to the ranches, get some weekend hauling duty, and maybe a hunting trip or two. It's an '02 F-350 PSD (I think it's in my sig). Anyway some of these trucks had the cat in the exhaust and some didn't. As my luck would have it, my truck has the animal. I upgraded the exhaust a LONG time ago to a 4" Stainless system, but since my truck had the cat from the factory they had to put it back in. I know the cost to replace one of these diesel cats is around $900, so I am not going to knock it out. I am thinking of cutting the cat out at the welds, put a new peice of 4" SS in it's place with the band clamps (one time at band clamp...) and then when inpection time comes around, put the cat back with the clamps and it's a done deal.

Will they (inspections) see right thru this? I do have a "good" shop that has looked at the truck before.
What other implications might I face?
Thanks for your help!

J.D.

As far as I know you wont have any problem. Your diesel should be a safety only inspection so you can cut it out and leave it out even at inspection time.

Ahhh, sweet! OK, now I need to find some 4" SS pipe around and some clamps. Anyone know of a source off-hand? I'll call the local diesel shops. Thanks!

nooblet is infamous around these parts
I got my muffler cut out, and some pipe welded in to straight pipe it for $40. Mine is 3" so it will cost a little bit more for you, but I would get it welded in and not mess with the clamps if it were me.

I understand what you guys are saying, but most of my system is SS, so I want to match that, however, I found more aluminized than I thought was under there. Also, I don't plan to stay in TX and I am sure the Air Force will ship us somewhere else anyway, so I want to be prepared in case we go back to CO, or better yet, AK! Which also ties into why I want to clamp this piece of pipe in, because I would bet that I will have to put it back in sometime in the future.

I think I found some pipe from www.mandrelbendingsolutions.com. They shipped me clamps yesterday, but I did not get any pipe and I am waiting on a response as to why.

Thanks for the help guys! I was hoping to work on this this weekend, but without the pipe, I can't really do much.
