Weather Alert: Tropical Storm forming GofM...Labor day

31 August, 2011 12:15 AM

NOAA Storm Hunters have begun watching a strong tropical depression building in the Western Caribbean, gaining strength from extreme warm temps and water in the Gulf of Mexico. This system is growing with intensity and NOAA has issued concern for the state of Texas for a tropical system of some magnitude, to include a hurricane, hitting anywhere from Brownsville, up through Houston and points north on the coast.

This situation may affect LABOR DAY WEEKEND.

Whereas there is no official hurricane watch or warning at this time, Tropical Storm Katia is scheduled to become a hurricane by midweek and the Caribbean system is in perfect position for organizing.

From NOAA:

- We continue to monitor a large area of disturbed weather in the western Caribbean Sea which could develop in the Gulf of Mexico from later this week into the weekend.
- At the very least this system will increase shower and thunderstorm activity along the Gulf coast during the second half of the week.

Further updates will come as needed.

Note: The above picture is real time. It updates as NOAA updates the data.

NOAA is currently stating that this tropical low is slowly forming and will continue to do so through the rest of the week and into the weekend.

Updates forthcoming as they are published.

No, I did not. Look, NO ONE more than I believes in the power of the spoken word. I have not only been praying for rain, but have been speaking aloud to God calling for rain. We need it and I am all in favor of it.

I do these threads because Texas weather is dangerous, can turn in a heart beat, and I don't want to see my friends impacted in any negative way. I like to monitor the weather and do this for y'all.

Please stop clouding up my threads with this BS. You're not obligated to post or to read.

No, I'm not upset, uptight or anything like that. I just want it to rain!

I would sure love to see some rain, not so much for me, I've seen it. But my kids don't know what rain is!

I can't imagine how bad it is for anyone who's livelihood depends on rain (farmer, rancher, etc).

Because of the drought .. watch out for grass fires.

Here in San Antonio, we donít see many grass fires started by vehicles, but the potential is still there. Any part of a vehicle Ė engine, exhaust, etc. - can cause a fire in tall, dry grasses. This can be a car, truck, or heavy machinery. The best way to prevent this is to not drive off roadways or only onto grass areas that are maintained (ie, cut down so the grass isnít tall enough to touch any part of the vehicle except the tires).

If a grass fire does occur, your personnel should take these steps:

1) Move the vehicle to a safe location.

2) Call 911. (Always call 911, regardless of whether the fire is extinguished. Firefighters can go over the area to make sure no hotspots remain so the grass fire doesnít pop up again after smoldering for a while.)

3) If they have an extinguisher, they can attempt to put the fire out from a safe distance. They also need to keep in mind that they need an escape path in case the fire grows and they need to be mindful of traffic on the roadway. It is certainly the safest option to wait for firefighters at a safe distance.

It is not safe to keep the vehicle over a fire Ė that could just escalate a grass fire into a vehicle fire. It is equally unsafe to attempt to put out the fire with anything other than an extinguisher or a water hose. Even that may not be effective depending on the size of the fire and other weather conditions, which is another reason to call 911. Stamping on the fire could result in your employees being burned and should absolutely be avoided.

Discarding g materials like matches or cigarette butts, barbeques, outdoor welding, and illegal burning of trash or other materials are some of the other causes for grass fires. In those instances the above rules still apply: move away, call 911.

BE SAFE

that has always been a fear of mine down here because of all the tall dead grass in our local parks and the smaller jeeps. a recipe for disaster, and the closest fire dept at least 30 miles!

May God have mercy on all of Texas. Unless He decides to intervene, it looks like this will miss Texas entirely, or just give the coast line some increased storm activity.

No further updates for Texas at this time, but I will monitor and update as needed.

Kiss this one goodbye. This thread can be closed. Hopefully soon we'll see some rain. My yard looks like the Grand Canyon.

Sorry y'all didn't get any rain but it sprinkled at my house. Cold front moved in and looks to stay for a little while. It's only about 60 right now and is only suppose to get to low to mid 80's all week. The streak of 100* days are over!!!!
