whats the best carb set-up to run on a small block........?

i have an edelbrock now but not really impressed with it. i've worked with holley's before and they seem to rap alittle better and from what i hear i could do alot better with a holley then with this edelbrock, not lookin for efficiency, lookin for best power and best running carb for my rig.

I ran holleys for years on the street(in one of my camaros) and hated it because they were so touchy and the power valves can be a pain.

I went to Carter AFB/Eldelbrock design and they seem to be a more reliable carb and also seem to need less cfm(advertised) vs. a holley.

It really depends on your wallet. Don't get me wrong Holley makes an exceptional product and are the best bar none in high performance applications, but my prefernce would be Carter for ANY amount of street use.

I like holleys a lot better than edelbrock. They are simple and easy to tune. If you dont plan to do any climbing or crawling go with a holley. If you plan to be on any inclines go with a quadrajet.

For offroad off-camber driving get the Holley Thunder carb. For street and mud-running the Quadrajet or Edelbrock will work fine. the power valves on holleys usually blow out due to bad ignition timing, vacum leaks or too much carb for the motor.

thing to watch for on quadrajets if the throttle plate shaft, they have brass bushings and will wear out and cause bad performance, drivability issues.

Or be done with it and go FI or propane

well if i go holley, i'll go with what i put on my drag car.....

holley 750 DP, pro-form center section, power valve delete piece. it was awsome, got 21 mpg on the highway, AWSOME throttle response and performance was through the roof. and this was on a built 306 in my 90 model mustang i drag raced.

thought about the quadraject as well. i'm just having problems with this edelbrock and want to try something else.

want to stick with gas and not go propane, and would love to fi but dont want to spend the dollars right now on the fi system i want for the truck eventually so i'll wait till i'm ready to leap over that fence.

what are the specs on the motor you are wanting to put this 750 DP on?

What problems are you having with the Edelbrock? They are by far the easiest to tune and most reliable carb out there. Definately my favorite of what's available.

I run a 750 eldebrock on my hot 350 small block...never had a problem with it....just bolt on, hook up fuel and linkage, and adjust with the two adjusting screw piece of cake.....i'd say eldebrock are good carbs for street and mud...mine has been, thinken of steping up to a offroad seriers eldebrock 650 carb...see if i get a lil better gas milage with a smaller carb on.

350, punched 30, crane cam, weiand (sp.) team g intake, 87-up heads (center bolt heads not exactly sure of year) ported, polished, all the goodies, accel hei distributor with all the accel goodies, edelbrock timing set, ngk plugs, accel wires, and this "old" edelbrock 750 carb.

i dont know, maybe its just getting old, somtimes it'll idle right, sometimes it'll idle to high, sometimes it wont idle at all. somties it'll run lean, somti4ms it'll run rich. i've had this thing adjusted so many times its not funny anymore and everytime it gets set right, about two days later the problems are back. everything else on the engine checks out great. and i'm not lookin for a streetable carbso to say. yes this is truck i drive all the time but i'm lookin for that pep and performance like i did with my holley's in the past. i can adjust holleys just fine so the adjustablility of the holley's i like better too. you can more finly tune a holley then you can an edelbrock. and not really at the mileage aspect of it, i never intended to get good gas mileage with this project anyways. i built it for the performance aspect and not economy, dont get me wrong, good power and good mileage is always a plus, i just want to get ever little bit of performance out of this engine as i can before swapping in the crank to make it a 383...that'll happen when i get a good set of aluminum heads for it. or a good set of aftermarket cast heads seeing how i'll be in the mudd and water alot.
