Suddenly got a burr under my saddle and felt the need for a little truck shopping. Day-um, brand new Super Duty trucks with a few bells and whistles are gettin' pricey.

'05 F250 XLT Supercab (not crew), long bed, diesel, auto, 4x4. Sticker was $41K+, nearly double what I gave for my current truck about two years ago (used). It was the lowest priced SD 4x4 I could find on the lot.

I think I like the new front coil suspension...looks quite beefy. Not sure I like an automatic, but overall, I really like the truck. Very quiet compared to my '01 Cummins. Gonna sleep on it. Told 'em I'd call them tomorrow.

The salesman was funny: kept trying to sell me on the features of the truck and how much better it was than a Dodge or Chevy. I kept telling him, "You don't have to convince me about how good your truck is. I wouldn't be here if I didn't believe you had a solid truck." When I tell him what payment I want, he comes back with, "We need to find you a truck down in the $35k range."

Now I'm getting a little miffed. I had already told him that I had walked the entire lot (very big lot) the night before after they closed and this was the only truck that had the minimum equipment I wanted AND fell close to my max price. I spouted the stock number to him as soon as I walked in the showroom. But he just had to go into the "I'm gonna sell him something, anything, tonight" salesman mode.

Then he comes back with numbers that have me paying nearly full sticker for his and giving me waaaay less than wholesale for mine AND the gall to tell me I gotta put down $6500 to get my payment where I want it (I ran numbers on a spreadsheet before I started this game). My miff-level goes up another notch. Initially, he just couldn't grasp the idea that I absolutely did not need a new truck, I was perfectly happy with my current truck, and if we couldn't get to the number I wanted on that one particular truck, then he wasn't going to make a sale.

Amazingly, after nearly an hour of "discussion," about $7k was trimmed off the bottom line. And after all that, I said, "Okay, lemme think about it." "Well Alan, all you need to do is leave us a check for $200 and we'll hold it for you." Hehe..."Nope. If it ain' here tomorrow, then it wasn't meant to be." And I left.

I love new trucks; I hate playing the game when you actually sit down to buy.

If I do buy it, I get a nice Milwaukee tool set :)

I almost traded my 99 SD a couple of weeks ago, nothing wrong with it, just had the new car itch. The jerks only wanted to give me 9k for it. I had already looked up the NADA value, avg. trade-in was 14.5K! And the MSRP for the identical truck is over 35K!! I got over the itch and decided to drive mine a while!
