Ozona Ranch Wheeling

Ok, guys. I need some input really quick.

Theoretically speaking, if TMTC were to open up an offroad ranch on the other side of Ozona, how many of you would go, how often, and would you be willing to support it by building trails, maintaining the property, and in general being part of the core support of locals in the area? I'm talking serious support 5-10 times per year, possibly even sharing gate duty with other clubs. This means that someone from your club volunteers to work the gate this week, next week a different club, etc...

It took me roughly 3 hrs to drive from San Antonio to this ranch (theoretically, of course). Is this too far? What would be your interpretation of "too far out" to drive to for a weekend of camping/wheeling?

The ranch would be 10 minutes off of I-10, but it would be approximately 30 minutes from Ozona for gas, motels, food, parts, etc...

The size is over 3,000 acres. Typical West TX vegetation: mesquite, scrub brush, and cactus. The general layout of the land would be flat valley completely surrounded by tall mesas, i.e. a giant bowl. Some of the mesas can be crawled, some horsepowered up, some not do-able period. There are rock ledges up the hill sides, some dry creek beds, some draws forming canyons between the mesas. No electricity available, but there is water from two windmills to drink.

I need feedback before this weekend. Please post your name (in case I want to quote), and whether or not you are a TMTC member.

Thanks,
Stacy

Just to delve in a bit.....

Katemcy Rocks is 2.5 hrs NNW from San Antonio
Trees Ranch is 2.5 hrs west of San Antonio

In comparison BMRA in Gilmer is approx 6-7 hours one way from San Antonio, more depending on your route and speed. that in itself negates a wide group of people who would otherwise be at BMRA a lot.

Trees and K-rocks both attract large groups every time they are open. Ozona is only 30 min further and would be open every weekend(?) this is a good thing.

There is a large contingent of wheelers \ offroaders in the San Antonio area in addition to all the folks from down south in the Valley \ Corpus Christi areas who IMHO would be very happy to see this "theoretical" place open. With proper management like has been shown at BMRA and the rules in place it would be a welcome place for all off-road enthusiasts. The terrain would be good for trials bike, motorcross, ATV's as well. I think the Trials riders would be thrilled at the chance to build some class A trails to ride on.

My gloves, chainsaw, and jeep are ready to work... just let me know when Imcooter. Anything I can do to help, just ask. :)

Okay, so the cat is somewhat out of the bag. If you guys hadn't figured it out before, now you know why I drove to Ozona 10 days ago. Stacy visited this past weekend.

TMTC members and those who REALLY would join if you had a TMTC park within 3-3.5 hrs from you (like what Stacy described above), you need to sound off and sound off FAST! If you know folks that aren't on this board and would go regularly, pass the word along and contact one of us user reps or an officer of TMTC (check website for addresses).

IMPORTANT: If you know dirt bikers and ATVers, contact them and get their feelings. Send them to this thread for input. This one single thread COULD make the difference on whether or not this park happens.

Edit: let's keep it to folks that are genuinely 3 hours or less from Ozona. Doesn't have to be SA. It's the 3 hr (or less) folk that we will look to for REGULAR AND OFTEN help in getting this thing off the ground.
Isn`t "to far to drive" a relative term? I woudn`t drive across the streat to do something I wasn`t dedicated to.Its getting harder to enjoy wheeling because the pay to play spots are now only open one weekend a month. When hunting season gets here we wont even have that.Sure I wish it was closer, but to finally have a place we can call our(wheelers) own would be sweet!I sure hope we don`t hafta wait till a spot is found that is within an hours drive of everybody in Texas. That would be like the state has our future in there hands again.
I'm guessing that if you have to ask, it's thought of as too far by somebody around TMTC already. Many of the San Antonio hunters ***** about the trip just to Junction let alone Ozona. I think some thing east of Sonora Preferablly around Junction would be better. Since Junction is roughly 100 Miles closer. I wont be making 10 trips. I might be able to squeeze 3.

I realize Katemcy has alot of back rounds and slower than 70 Miles per hour areas. But I think somebody isn't traveling the speed as I am. Ozona is going to be at leat 4.5 hours for me. That's 233 miles at 55-60 mph. Anybody got room on their trailer?

Oh we'd love to be closer in. Junction would be grand. Rock Springs just spiffy. Problem is: we can't find AFFORDABLE land AND make a BIG ENOUGH park AND have NEIGHBORS that can tolerate us when we get that 'close' to SA.

Two things wrong with that,we aren`t talking about hunting, and this sport does require a certain amount of dedication. I guess it all boils down to,if you want to do something bad enough you will.
I'm about

3 hrs from BMRA
3.5 hrs from Clayton, OK
4 hrs and a bit from Katemcy
2 hrs from the Wheelin Ranch

But I feel confident that I would make the 7 hr drive to this possible new property at least twice a year and probably more. It's that good.

I'm from the wrong part of the State to count, but this place sounds great! Interstate driving the whole way. 3000 acre's, thats alot of country! It almost sounds like the opposite of Barnwell mountain, with this having a bowl in the middle. My wife loves to camp in that part of the country.

Can ya'll give us the long. and lat. for the property so we can look at it on the topo map? If not yet, I understand.

San Angelo is 100 miles from Ozona. the Concho 4-wheelers are in San Angelo, Matt Hodges is one that comes to mind. They are heavily involved with Trees Ranch which is a longer drive than Ozona. I emailed the Club President telling him about this thread. Quite a few nice rigs in that area as well.
We live in San Antonio and in the last year we have traveled to Gilmer (8 hours), Las Cruses New Mexico (11 hours), Piedra Negras, Mexico (3 hours), Mason (2.5 hours), Trees Ranch (2.5 hours), Laredo (3 hours) and Ozona would be just a skip, hop, and jump away. We would love to have a TMTC offroad park that close to us and would support and get involve to help develop and promote it. I am just about finish with my 1 ton jeep, my wife has a jeep wrangler (lynne's toy) and my son offroads his PW80 dirt bike. We are also members of TMTC.

i got some rigs down there maybe i will cruise by to see what i see in the land. i ain't got a 4x4 so i am out but if i did, it sounds like something i would do.
as other as said before it's going to be too far for someone. it would be nice for a park to open up so that the west part of texas could have somewhere to play. 3 hours of drive time for a weekend of wheeling is nothing. let's do this.
I live in Fort Worth, would I make a trip to this area, hell yea! TMTC # 2801. I've spent some time out there near San Angelo, and it would be awesome wheeling area.
William Crawley and I am a TMTC member. I'd come out several times a year to cut trails, play, whatever you need. That's closer to me than Gilmer and I've got a TMTC membership so I can play there. Some place closer is even more appealing.

Looks like the Caverns of Sonora are on the way. Something for the other half to look forward to besides wheeling. :D

Possible new

It's hard to put feed back in a locked forum. But south of Houston we got mud, mud and mud, and a lot of clogged up car washes. Shilo is a good 3hr trip for me and it has a lot of mud. (hmmm , I smell a theme here). A 6hr drive to a place with real rock hills ,that has a good chance of being open on a weekend I have off is rather appealing. That amount of land could keep quite a few people busy, without stepping on each others toes. I am also assuming there a bit of something for all rigs?? popcornn
I would support it and make a trip there atleast once or twice a year and it 7.5 hrs from me
