Spark plug wire repair??

1910 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  peterwoods
One of my spark plug wires got onto the header and melted a bit. It doesn't appear to be too bad, just enough that it was sparking onto the header. This is a fairly new set of wires and I was wondering if anyone has any tricks to fix it, somewhat of a long-term fix preferably. I assume duct tape is out of the question. I already made it so they won't touch the headers anymore. I think I got them at Autozone, do you think they will warranty them?

Thanks for the help.

Buy more, have 7 extras.
Haha, I thought I had a spare already, but it was the one I burned through last time. I'm trying to avoid buying a whole new set right now, just too darned broke.
I'm thinking of putting some of that liquid electrical tape stuff on it for the time being.
Is it still sending spark? Then tape it. If not it's junk.
After tape, you may add a short piece of fuel line cut down one side and slipped over the wire. It will add a bit of protection next time it falls over onto the exhaust.
You can buy slip on heat boots (Auto Zone ) I think. slide it up into position then zip it in place?
When this happened to me..... I pulled back the outer sleeve, electrical taped it up, put the outer sleeve back together and dipped it into some of that "plier handle goo" stuff- I dont remember what it is called right now,, but you understand what Im talking about hopefully!! almost 2 yrs and never had a problem

Plasti-cote?
Yeah, thats the stuff!! it is supposed to be non-conductive so I figured it would be good for that- worked until I got rid of the rig!
Get rid of spark plugs a together. Diesel swap it.

PROBLEM SOLVED!!!:toast:!!! Unless its a mud truck, then that a little too much front end wieght~
As long as autozone shows the wires under your phone number, take the entire set in and swap them under warranty. They are lifetime...

Thanks for the idea's guys. I had a "duh" moment when I read electrical tape above. I thought, duh, why didn't I even think of that. I'm going to see if the zone has it in their system and if so I'll try to get new ones that way.
Typically no. You are working with high voltages of at least 20,000 volts. If the wire covering has a flaw, it will find a way to escape. Even when the wire is set off from metal items, you are still working with dirt, water, and other substances that leave behind moisture and dust that can act as a conduit for that voltage. Any voltage leak is not able to ignite a spark plug as planned.
