Angry In tool and parts He11 (Rant)

What is it about Auto parts stores near the border now days. Or any hardware store near the border for that matter.

You can not even get simple service tools or any tool or part for that matter, Unless you are working on a low rider or a “Kazoo up da butt” rice burner. ( I.e. curb feelers or crappy stickers that kids think make there POS go faster)

I have been trying for quite some time now to get these simple parts and tools so I can repair, build, and or fix the mounting pile of broke down rigs at my house. Now keep in mind that none of these item’s are Super Secret NASA designed must keep out of the public’s hands tools or parts. There just items that any “NORMAL” automotive store would have in stock or be able to order. Yet some how down here do not exist and they never have. I would gladly order them and have them shipped but then again there is no such thing as delivery here unless the driver can pull right up to your front door and drop them off. (just forget about taking the little note of “missed delivery” down to claim your stuff because it will be gone) The simple things that I am able to get like light bulbs, fuses, duct tape, and U-joints are he11 in themselves to acquire. Well here this would be the normal conversation for those item’s

( me ) Yes I need item X.

( parts monkey ) No problem Sir we have that.

( me ) Cool I need two of them.

( parts monkey ) Ok but we will have to order them.

( me ) Uhhhh what???? You just said you had them.

( parts monkey ) Yes we have them but we will have to order them.

( me ) Well why did you just say you have them?

( parts monkey ) Blank stupid stare

( parts monkey ) Uhhhhh…….

( me ) Never mind just order them for me.

( parts monkey ) Ok we should have them in a couple of day’s .

( me ) Walk out ready to strangle the idiot.

Now this is just for something as simple as a U-joint.

Now on to the ones that do not exist here nor have they ever existed any where according to these parts tards.

First Item : Tapered reamer

Link for a visual reference

http://www.pscmotorsports.com/produc...roducts_id=499

( parts monkey ) Sorry Sir there is no such thing as a tapered reamer.

Second Item Carrier bearing puller

Link for visual reference

http://www.usatoolwarehouse.com/usat.../otc-4520.html

( parts monkey ) Sorry Sir that tool does not exist.

( me ) Give me your tool book .

( me ) flip, flip, flip.

( me ) Really ? What’s that?

( parts monkey ) A bearing puller.

( parts Monkey ) but that tool does not exist, can I interest you in a steering wheel puller?

( me ) “ready to stroke out and go into orbit after I strangle the idiot”

And my personal favorite

The 9/16ths bolt

( me ) I need 6 bolts just like this one.

( parts monkey ) Sorry Sir that bolt size does not exist.

( me ) What the he11 are you talking about I have one right here in my hand.

( parts monkey ) Nope bolt sizes go from ½” to 5/8ths there has never been a 9/16ths made.

( me ) You are obviously a complete MORON!!! This is a stock bolt from a Chevy truck leaf spring.

No matter where you go here NAPA, Car Quest, NotagottaVATOZONE, or any of the other off brand place’s you run into the same results. Dear GAWD I can walk into the NAPA in Ozona and get every thing I need and they have it in stock for the most part. And that store is tiny it’s an old converted gas station. Not like the Wal-Mart sized stores here.

Parts store are now retail stores. Theres longer nollagable parts peaple there all old and cranky, retired or die or on the way. Its cheaper for a idoit to look at a screen and tell you yes or no. I know my wife has been with Ol'reilly's for almost 7 years now. She's a manager over a $275.000 monthly store here in austin. I here the **** every day and probly 75% of my parts have to be custom ordered or by from a specialty parts house. You can order alot of stuff on-line now and have it shipped to you. You mite have problems with that. Drop off location.

As for reamer and 9/16 bolts those are specialty parts i promose you that. I had the custom order 4.5 inch 9/16 bolts thorw a bolt and nut company. And a reamer its like a custom machining tool.

It's hard to find a good parts peaple they dont like missing with computer and like to hold the counters up. And leave at 3:30 or 4pm and come in early so they have time to sit on there ***'s. Plus most focks think they are there to tell them how to fix there car thats a mechanic.

I walked into an Autozone on Monday and asked to see their grade 8 hardware cabinet, because I needed some, well, grade 8 bolts. Response: "Uh, what are those?". I turned around and left.

Stupid's everywhere, but it's real easy to find at AutoZone.

I went in to get power steering fluid. I found some that had stop leak in them, but didn't know how much I would need--so just in case, I bought 2 bottles. Used almost a full bottle, but had plenty. Waited 3 days--leak cleared up. Went to return 2nd, unused bottle.

(me) I'd like to return this
(pm) Anything wrong with it?
(me) nope
(pm) did you open it?
(me) uhhh... no, the little silver seal is there and everything
(pm) oh... well, are you sure you're not going to need it in the future? this stuff doesn't always work too well. I'd hate for you to have to make another trip.
(me) *points to bottle* Says right there, "Guaranteed to work, or your money back"
(pm) yeah, they all say that
(me) Okay, you're right. It didn't work and I hated to open the second bottle. I'd like my money back...
(pm) Oh--okay. Well I can do that. You want it back on your card?

It's gotten to the point where I hate even thinking about trying to find parts. Probably 75% of the time I'm putting together something that wasnt factory. When I know an application it's usually not too bad, but sometimes I just need to look for something that will work. You'd think I was asking how to do brain surgery.

Most of the problem is that they dont pay their employees near enough to get knowledgeable people in the stores. I worked for autozone off and on for about 3 years; they started me out at around $7/hr; when I left, they were starting new hires at $6 and last I heard they dropped to min. wage.

I guess I could have mentioned the employee who had no idea what gr8 bolts were was a girl, who couldn't have been more than 17, sporting a nice big hickey on her neck. Am I stereotyping here??

Yeah well what is even better -- I go into a parts store and ask for something, mind you I know what I am talking about with the parts on my truck cause I work on it myself -- and the idiots behind the counter first cant hardly speak english and second tell me I am looking for the wrong part -- well low and behold after they check their pretty little computer it tells them the same part I just asked for. Like I am some stupid blonde girl who dont know sh** about truck parts --- that crap right there pisses me off big time !!!

Your missing the point BJ.

At least in S.A. or he11 even Kerrville for that matter you have a decent chance of getting the parts you need even if you have to look up the part for the employee.

Even the grumpy old "real" parts guy's like mentioned above that own the stores down here have no idea 10W-40 oil is.

I know that you have to put up with your fair share of "Dip sticks" that walk through the door that have no clue, but that is not the point of this thread.

The point is........

If someone is going to opperate a parts store at least have the decency to stock simple commonly used parts and tools and have the ability to order the less commonly used parts and tools. And not just stock / sell crappy fuzzy dice air freasheners, plastic "My little ghey pride pony" shifter knobs, and glow in the dark floor mats that have "insert vehicle brand logo here" on them.

I like to mess with the counter jockeys myself, I am either very vague or so specific that they get confused, it's great.

(me) I need a ----bulb for a 78 Chevy K10.
(Jockey) What size engine?
(me) 506
(jockey) blank stare
(Jockey) what kind of engine is that?
(me) a bored and stroked 454
(jockey) why didnt you say 454?
(me) what does engine size have to do with a taillight bulb?
(jockey) What transmission? (notice, no reply on why he/she needed to know engine size)
(me) Which one?
(jockey) Yes Sir.
(me) yea, which one?
(jockey) what?!
(me) well, it's had a th350, th400 and an sm465.
(jockey) what's in it now?
(me) a sm465.
(Jockey) Ok, does it have a/c?
(me) but that tranny isnt factory to my truck.
(jockey) what?!
(me) it came with a th350.
(jockey) (makes changes to computer) ok. does it have a/c?
(me) but the 506 isnt stock to my truck either, it came with a 350.
(jockey) (makes changes to computer) What transmission is it?
(me) now or factory? (see my game, yes, I'm THAT a$$hole)
and it continues until he/she is so frusterated they get help, or i get bored and tell them I need a 1187 bulb.

My point is, they have no knowledge of what the sell. If they didnt have that stupid ***** computer, they would be useless. So I get online, get the part number and walk in with that. Even then....
(Jockey) what year is the vehicle sir?
(me) What does it matter, I have the part number?!

Want to have fun with them, tell them you are looking for a slave cylinder for an 85 chevy 1 ton.

I love being an a$$hole...........

A while back when I was doing the tranny swap on my truck I needed some parts to rig up the hydro clutch. So I go into the autozone by my house and tell the guy that I need a piece of universal brake hard line and that I need to look through the rubber hoses to find one that will work. I already knew where everything was, I just needed to grab what I needed.

He starts looking it up in the computer and goes through the whole routine of questions. I tell him again, that I just need to look for what I need and that it's not going to be in the computer. He still insists on trying to look it up even after I've told him that it's not going to be factory parts. Finally, I tell him, "it's a 79 K10 with 79 K20 axles, 81 K30 454, 93 2wd chevy nv4500, 74 dodge t-case, 85 chevy clutch master with an aftermarket slave."

At that point he finally got the hint and took me to the back. I grabbed the hardline that I needed and found a hose in the second box I pulled out.

Not all parts people are bad (I've been on both sides of the counter), but it seems that they have all been going down hill the past few years. Corporate is too worried about saving a buck and making more sales than training their employees to do a better job.

"I need a brake caliper for a '78 k10 pickup."

Ford or Chevy?
Front or rear?
What engine?
What tranny?
A/C?
1/2 or 1 ton?
4 wheel drive?

Even though there is enough info in the original question.

I have had decent luck, what pisses me off is having to drive to 4 different auto zones and 2 orielys, 1 napa, and Amarillo offroad, to get what I need.
The best parts store i have been to is Pep boys. The one on the north side of Colorado Springs. I didn't need any parts, just a shot at the hot blond chick they had working in the tire center changing tires.

Really, ,,, Whatever happened to the parts stores like Super Speed Shop?
We used to have one here, but now it's a high end light fixture store.

LOL! I went to autozone looking for a hub bearing for a rockwell. I had the bearing in my hand and the part # written down. I asked the guy for the part# and laid the bearing in front of him. He asked me what vehicle it was under....lol...a sonoma! you can prolly figure out the rest of the story. I told him it was a 2 1/2 ton and not a sonoma. Needless to say he brought out a wheel bearing for a sonoma and looked confused when it wasn't the right one...lol! These guys now days don't have a clue how to open a book and look up a part #. I went over to abc where I frequently shop and asked for their bearing book. In about 2 minutes I had a part# that was in their computer and they had the bearing in stock. It's not hard!!!

I enjoy going to AutoZone. Really. It's always an adventure, and I always come out more amused than I went in. But I do understand the frustration of them either not having the part, or not having enough of them.

Axle lug studs for example... I need six for a complete axle replacement. They have 2 at three different locations in town. Three transactions, three trips, and three conversations with the counter-folk. Lots of time, standing in three different lines at both the counter and the cash register.

Snick....we ship alot to people that request it to be "hold at location for customer pickup" you might try that when ordering. Then the shipper "should" call you when it gets there, but it is easier just check the tracking number every day.

I would do that but,

Unless you order the part from them they won't let you ship stuff to there location. Which brings us back full circle. "I can't order that it doesn't exist."
Even when you show it to them in there own parts catalog or give them the part #.

It just totaly brings the suck when I order stuff because I have to have it shipped to Kerrville to make sure it will arrive. Then it's $150 in fuel and a wasted day to go get it. This area has a uber nasty habit of " lost in transit "

I was talking about getting something shipped from any supplier. PSC for ex with the reamer.... when they ship the order they can set it up as like this
Customer: Snick
Attn: Fedex HOLD
Address: your Street address

It should ship to the nearest fedex terminal and you can pick it up there. Should be the same with UPS. Not sure if Kerrville si the closest terminal. One other trick with shipping stuff to you would be to make sure the shipper insures the package for $100 even if it is only $25. Up to $100 is free.
