2008 Chile Challenge

Was awesome.. River Rat and I had a kickass time. Met some cool folks made some new friends. I'll definitely be going back next year.

We left out Wed AM around 10:30 and got to the Las Cruces fairgrounds @ 8:55 PM, just in time to get our registrations, we got that done and headed for the motel 6 (which we will NOT be at next year, no internet and lousy service) Went to look for some dinner and Wal-Mart and Arby's has free wireless so we were able to get online for a few minutes.

Day one we ran Cayenne Crawler, a "hard trail" was a nice run met some cool folks and had a great trail leader got to play around some. Mostly just a rocky trail with no really hard obstacles other than some uphill ledges at the end of the trail. there is one optional waterfall that I did about mid-way through the trail, took a few minutes to get lined up just right then I spanked it. River Rat tried it next but was denied due to his carb not liking vertical ledges, After River Rat made his try there was one other jeep made a try and was able to get over it. No one else was interested in trying so we moved on down the trail.

We stopped a lil bit after this and had lunch while one of the fullsize guys made some driveshaft repairs, and another group running a different trail went by.

Then we were on the last section and it's all uphill, kind of twisty and some ledges made this a fun exit.

The pic above is the same ledge where Chaparro Mike broke his D20 output last year. got to hit that ledge just right to get over it, I tried to go to the left and was denied repeatedly, finally I just went right and went on up the trail. A Toyota broke his rear locker on the last ledge and had to be strapped up @ the end by yours truly -film @ 11 -

Day Two - Rocotillo Rapids

This was a short trail but a lot of fun, very twisty and some really good obstacles, We blew through this in record time it seems (just a lil over 2 hours), only one rig had any trouble and that did not take long,

We thought we were going to get to run a second trail but most of the folks in our group wanted to head back to camp so that was our day.

Day three - Patzcuaro's Revenge

Nemesis one

Nemesis two

Nemesis Three

The Extreme of the Extreme trails. man what a trail, from the first obstacle to the last it will try you and your rig. We had a large group today and it took a good while to run this trail and there was quite a bit trail repairs. Broken driveshafts, tie-rods, burnt wires, flat tires, etc.. there are two ways to go up nemesis one, to the left up a ledge or straight trying to straddle a crack and turning out of it to the left. I tried the left ledge first, the jeep shut off just as I was at the top and proceeded to argue with me about starting again, I rolled back and finally got it running and then I was out of line and as I tried to get it back inline I got it wedged in the rocks, had to get a pull from the guy behind me and then I went through the crack, got hung there and had to winch again, then 50' past this is nemesis two and most folks pull up to it as high as they can and then winch, I did the same. Only two rigs in our group made nemesis 2 unassisted, a comp buggy and a toyota with 118" WB and lots of gear. River Rat was on nemesis two and had the winch out and this guy on the side calmly says "jeeps on fire" Neal (guy riding with River Rat) sprang into action and put the fire out, then River Rat had to be winched back off the ledge and fix the jeep, turned out his man oil pressure gauge line had sprung a leak right at the fitting on the block and was spraying oil on his header. spooky moment for sure. While River Rat was doing his trail repair a couple of other rigs made the ledge and then River Rat did his and was up and over. then he made the save of the day. the orange uni-mog was going up and trying to do it unassisted and we put a strap on him just to be safe and tied it off to River Rats Jeep

About the time he was at the top his rig decided to unload on the front and away he went, we hollered and River Rat gassed on his jeep and pulled the guy back down (yes, there is video)

a cpl ledge were after this and then it was time for nemesis 3, since I was now 1st in line the trail leader asked me to go round so the others could have a winch point, and I could take a try later, by the time everyone was up it was getting late so I'll have to hit nemesis 3 next year.

Day Four - Tabasco Twister - the best trail of the week

Ever have one of those days wheeling when everything just fell into place and the stars were lined up perfectly, Well that was my day, I had a blast on this trail and spanked every obstacle on it with ease.

A lot of others were not so lucky, from the moment we got to the trail head there was stuff breaking, A mini wheeler broke his curtain rod and a heim, TJBuggie pretzeled his tie rod, Bullet's dana 60 studs pulled out of his leaf spring, another jeep broke his upper control arm and broke a heim, a lost bead, a ripped tire, and I'm sure there was more. River Rat and I were supposed to run Habanero falls, but we changed our mind and asked if we could run with this group and be the last two and play around, We were up in the front by the end of the trail

Saturday night they had a big raffle and bbq dinner, lots of really cool stuff was given away, Warn 9.5ti winch, 3 sets of goodyear tires, four $300 GC from Stak, two sets of RS9000 shocks, plus a whole lot more. the Chile Challenge is a great event and I will for sure be back next year. I'd like to thank our trail leaders, all in all I thought they did a great job Esp Pat from premier power , Was cool to meet him, Chris our Day one trail leader, and all the other folks who help put this event on. And thanks also to Neal, his son Nate (sceep) and his friend Goose for all the help with River Rats Jeep when it caught on fire.
