Canadian mud bog 2/25-27/05 (pics now)

I figured i would post up a new post for the mud bog right now i am fixing to start loading some pics up so it will be awhile before i am done. i got 165 pics but i ain't getting all of them on here!!!
I Had a blast, it was alot of work this weekend but hey that is part of the sport right?
Met Evan, cool guy i would wheel with him anytime! When i first got there i went riding around while i waited for zach to show up. I figured i would look for other people from texas4x4.org since i knew there was suppose to be around 4 or 5 people there. The first person i run into was Evan, i flagged him down and we got to talking, since he was riding around i ask if i could ride with him to check out the area. well i have to say his welding held up real good since my big butt didn't go throught the floor!! He showed me more of the river then i knew about since he been there way more then i have(only been there once).
We get back to his camp, and about a hour later zach shows up with his brother and the scout. We go find us a campsite and setup camp. unloaded the scout and we went off riding around checking out rigs and places. i took pics of what i thought was cool rigs and getting ideas from them. Then me, zach, and his brother levi head into town to get some stuff from the store and came back to the camp and pretty much stayed there til ZACH had to make a nature call. so we head down to the place where the event was going to take place and he went to the portapotty.

Now i tell you this story to tell you this coming up story.

I was sitting in the scout waiting for zach to finish, i was looking around watching the people build the mud area for tommorrow. When Levi walks up to the scout!! i was like what are you doing here? He preceeds to tell me that he had drove his truck over here and on the way he picked up a bottle in the side wall of the truck and he had a flat tire. So he parked it by one of the campsite area. He said he was heading over to the site where the mud pit was so he left. Then zach comes out and i told him "you want the good news or the bad news??" He just looked at me like just give it to me!!
so i told him his brother is fine but he got a flat tire and the truck is just back behind us. Well we go looking for his brother and going by the light we went down a road and on the right side of the road was a HUGE mud hole. Well need less to say since we didn't see it(cause it was dark) we just fell into it and couldn't get out. luckly someone was near by and they offer to help. He had a winch so we hooked it up and started pulling but it was pulling the jeep into the hole. so they hooked the jeep to a surburban and finally we got the scout out.
So we go back, after thanking the fella for the pull, and we found levi in a truck heading to us( we called him letting him know about us in a mud hole and can't get out so he got someone). we head over to levi's truck and started pulling the tire off. In order to keep the truck from falling since it was on sand we had to tie the truck to the scout an jack it up at the same time. after hunting down tools in the truck and getting the spare out and getting it on, we finally go back to the campsite and settle down for the night.
This is just friday i will tell about the other two day later!

Well, it started out as the trip that wasnt meant to be and finished off that way for us.

We had problems before we even left town. I was pulling the scout with my brothers truck since the K10 is down. We went to get gas in the scout and get a tire swapped out on the trailer, while we are in the gas station my brother tells me to look at the rear bumper. I look out and it's hanging halfway to the ground; apparently, it was missing the two main brackets that hold it to the frame. We took the scout back to the house and went to buy a receiver hitch for his truck. We got the hitch put on and finally pulled out, again, around three on friday.

We were cruising down the interstate and I made a comment about there not being any troopers out; usually you see one every 20 mi. or so. Sure enough, right before we got to Amarillo we get pulled over for not having safety chains on the trailer. Luckily the lights worked (they didnt work earlier because the hitch was grounding because of the new paint) and he just gave us a warning and let us go.

We finally got to the river around 6. We stopped to say hi to Evan and Cody and then went to find a camping spot. As we were about to stop, a park ranger waves us over for not having a front license plate. My brother explained that he'd wrecked it recently and hasnt gotten it put back on yet. Once again we were on our way.

We got camp set up and then wheeled a little bit before it got dark. We went back for a while until I had to use the john. So me and cody took off to the other side of the bridge and my brother went to meet some friends of his. Afterwards while looking for my brother after learning of his punctured tire, I submarined the scout in a mud hole I didnt see in time. My bald little 36s were no match for the liquid dirt. It took a Rubicon with a winch and a tug from a built suburban to get us out.

After we got out we went to change the tire on my brothers truck, which was quite a chore. Needless to say, loose sand, a slight incline, loose bumper (see above paragraph), and a high lift dont go too good together. We were finally able to get it done without losing any valuable body parts after tieing it off to the scout. After getting that done we headed back to camp and sat around the fire for the rest of the night.

It was cool when we got up saturday morning, but it warmed up and turned out to be a real nice day. We went to watch the bogs, but they were running the stock classes so me and cody did a little trail riding. We did a few trails then I decided to follow a small group back a little ways. We came to a real nice rock climb that was a little challenging. First a longbed chevy tried it but only made it about halfway because he kept high centering and was open front and rear. He finally backed down after several minutes. Next a guy in a fairly stock scout tried it, but only made it about a quarter of the way. It was our turn next. We had to trie a few different lines and back up a few times, but we made it to the top. Next a built jeep with just a rear locker tackled the trail. He struggled quite a bit, but eventually made it up.

While we were doing that trail there was smoke coming from under the hood of the scout. I found out that the PS hose was spraying fluid on the engine through a crack in the hose. We barely made it back to the mud bog area before it was empty again. Cody and I went to town and got the parts to fix it.

We got it fixed and decided to drive to the other side of the bog, which was a mistake because it was really crowded. We got further down and came up on a guy in a 2wd dodge burried up in the sand. We hooked up and pulled him down to the river, turned around and then back to the main road where a S10 blazer was burried up. I decided to pull him out. I hit the gas and drove up an embankement to get out of the way of the traffic. While I had the wheel turned, the steering hose built up enough pressure to blow out of the compression fitting on the orbital (the fitting worked fine before, but wouldnt hold this time). We got it put back on, tighter this time, and went down to the other end of the river to play in the less croweded hills.

We got off in the hills and I was trying to make it up an obstacle when I noticed more smoke and no steering. Well, as you can guess, the line blew off again. One major drawback to full hydro steering is that you cant steer at all without hoses. Cody and I grabbed the tools and started hiking back to camp. Luckily some guys in a pathfinder hauled us back so we didnt have to walk too far. We jumped in cody's truck and went to town to hunt down some fittings to redo the hose with a double flare instead of the compression fitting, which I should've done in the first place.

We got back to the scout just as the sun was setting and got to work fixing it. I attempted to flare the tubing the first time, but it went crooked and I had to try again. One problem though, after cutting the bad flare off, there wasnt enough tubing left to get a double flare on it. After thinking for a minute I decided to try a single flare since we had nothing to lose at this point. There was barely enough tubing for a decent single flare, but luckily it held and didnt leak.

Once again we had it up and running so we ran a few trails before heading back. We went through them with no problems, but when we were coming out of the hills we came up on a huge mud hole. I tried to stay up to the left, but we ended up sliding off to the right into a hole that swallowed both right tires. There just happened to be some people sitting nearby that pulled us out of the hole. After getting out, we discovered that the front right tire had blown a bead, which might have been what caused us to get stuck.

It took us a while to get the mud cleaned off and to get the wheel off the truck and back on. We went back to camp, parked the scout, changed clothes and headed down to watch the end of the mud bogs, which was the good part since it was all the big dogs running. We watched Evan sink his "little" blazer and watched another blazer on 53s crawl right through it. They built a good mud pit this year, everyone was having a hard time with it, even the built trucks with big blocks and 44" tires. Last year some of the stock trucks on 31s and 33s were making it through. After they finished we went back to camp and went to sleep.

My brother was still at his friends camp site. He tried to leave early this morning but the truck wouldnt start. He slept for a while and tried it again at 5:30 and it fired up. This bit of info will come into play later this afternoon.

We got up and headed down to Evan's camp to see if they wanted to do some wheeling before we all left. We headed back to my camp to get my brother. I went to see if Catfish wanted to come, but someone said he had already left. Evan went and asked Gorilla to go with us. We all headed towards the hills to have some fun.

I went up the first obstacle without any problems and Gorilla followed behind doing the same. He has a nicely built "blazer" buggy. Evan was next and was doing fine until he ran out of gas. He got to try out his new winch again, which is very . Me and Gorilla flexed out our rigs a little bit while we waited for the gas to come. Once Evan had the green monster running again we headed for another trail, which proved to be challenging.

Gorilla tried it first, but was unsuccessful and eded up taking the bypass. I gave it hell and ended up breaking a bead on the front right in the process. We got it fixed and gave it more hell. I tried several times and even almost had it, but the carb. just wouldnt make it go because of the steep angle it was on. I too had to take the bypass.

We did a couple easy ones, then found a 4' rock ledge to go up. I had done it the night before and didnt have a problem, but it proved to be a challenge today. I tried it a couple times, then let cody drive so he could get his first taste of rock crawling. He had trouble, so I took over again and eventually got up and over the ledge. Gorilla pulled up to it and made it look easy. At this point we decided to call it a day and head back to camp.

We got everything packed and loaded up and headed back towards Lubbock. I stopped at a convenience store just inside Amarillo to grab something to drink and snack on. This was around 2 this afternoon. Remember me mentioning my brother having problems getting the truck to start? Well, the little demon came back. We messed with it for a while and initally thought the fuel pump wasnt working, but we eventually narrowed it down to the ignition module. He called his friends, who came and took him to the parts store. He had the module tested and it turned out to be bad. He finally got back, we put everything back together and finally got back on the road at about 6. We finally made it back earlier tonight and he headed back to Kermit.

Overall it was a good trip and we had a good time. I just realized that I wrote a novel. Oh well, I'm going to bed.

Sorry, I only got a few pics. I was too busy having fun. I'll post them up later.

I also realized that Gorilla (James) is supposed to be spelled Gorrila.

Also forgot to tell about Evan getting stuck at his campsite and his front fender breaking off on the trail.

Need to work on my recovery skills

It was a good time, even tho I spent 2 hours pulling out 3 stuckies that were
stuck trying to get each other out on saturday. One of em was a K5, that's the funny part, got the F-250 out, got the F-150 out, but I couldn't get the K5 out. Gave up on trying to get him out from one side, so I rolled up and was moving to the other when a stock Cherokee yanked him out, man that was a little .........
Ended up Saturday night scarring some virgin ride alongs. I flexing out in a gully next to Whatever maker.
Ran out of room on my camera taking pic's of the guys that were bashing the ever lovin crap out of thier stuff on the backside of Widow.
Heard a rumor that some of those guys made it up Widow, some say without
a pull some say they had to be winched. Wish I could of seen that.
But I work with a guy that says he has pic's.
So we'll know the truth pretty quick.
Sunday, got up, (I went went back to the house, no camper, kinda wimpy, too cold), reloaded, headed back out, just got off the trailer when Evan pulled up and you know the rest from there.
Afterwards, I watched the 50 some odd people that were admiring the guy that got his 4 door, lb, ford buried just past the the bogs/drags.
Thanks to Evan, Zach, and Cody for the tag along on Sunday, it was fun.
Whenever yall are ready to go again I"m game.
I got some decent pic's if someone can help me post them, or tell me how.

On a serious note,
We, as a group, need to come up with a plan of attack.
This closing the river off, or 100 yards from the river, CAN NOT HAPPEN.
Resting on our butts, we'll watch it close.
If it takes a $20 dollar park pass, or, a breeding program for this sardine,
lets not rest, I don't want to drive for 3 hours, or have to go to a private ranch to wheel.

James

Ok here goes my story. Its not as good as the others but interesting just the same I suppose.

Me and another local pulled out of town late Friday night. All was well when we pulled into Amarillo but soon got a call. Another member of our High Plains Off Road club had lost a trailer tire and wheel sometime during the last 50 miles traveled. We looked for it but were nearly to him already. We had 10 trailers between all of us on site and none of our spares would fit his trailer. So while someone went for a spare someone else went for new studs. Soon we were back on the road and at the river in no time. We made camp and struck out for some midnight wheelin. We traveled up river and upon reaching the bridge I saw the best stuck of the weekend. This poor guy was having a very bad day and it only got worse for him. I didn't get many pictures this weekend but this one is definatly a keeper. On this day, Ford stands for..... Found On River Dead

The truck sank more after this pic was taken. One winch would only compress the springs, two winches removed the bumper. By this time the owner was drunk and biligerant... You can guess what happend next... and of course he lost. I'm sure the bleeding stopped but that Ford may still be there? By this time I went back to camp so I could get some rest for the bog in the morning.

I was up early to head down to the pit and get teched in. Once there I began what seemed to turn out as an all day bull session. Lots of discussion about last years events and even more about the insane changes being made to many differnt rigs to make them more competitive this year. There were also some representives on site from Anglefire Resorts (NM). They are planning a bog this year in April at the resort and have requested the help of the Outlaws and High Plains Off Road to help make thier event a success. They have also offered 1/2 price rooms at the resort if we can make the trip.

The pace the bog was taking was extermely slow, (as this one usualy is) but the pit was better than it has been in many years I belive. Well its finally race time, and with four ahead of me in my class, I dont have much to go on as far as choosing the best line to take. The ones ahead of me spread out abit and lead me to commit to a line I was confident in. Amazingly I set the bar high with an 8.21 second run all the way out the back. This run held 1st place through the middle of the second round consisting of about a 15 rig field. I made 3 more runs at it going all the way everytime in under 9 seconds but never better than my first time. I would wind up settling for 4th place.

After my final run I checked the standings and decide to head back to camp for some rest and grub. I noticed the truck cranked hard when I went started it up and a glance at the gauges tells me that my alternator has been mud . Bad thing about a computer controled is that if you have no fire, your screwed. Three miles back to camp and more traffic than a porta john at a chilie cook off. I made it back and start charging my battery only to find out that I also compromised the right front bead on my last run filling it with mud and loosing air fast. At this point I'm tired, really need to wrok the next day, and really just dont want to mess with it so I load up to come home. There were so many people it took me almost 2 hours to go the 2 miles back to the highway. I can't wait till the next one.

Sorry I put you all to sleep,
Catfish

On a serious note,
We, as a group, need to come up with a plan of attack.
This closing the river off, or 100 yards from the river, CAN NOT HAPPEN.
Resting on our butts, we'll watch it close.
If it takes a $20 dollar park pass, or, a breeding program for this sardine,
lets not rest, I don't want to drive for 3 hours, or have to go to a private ranch to wheel.

James
I'm glad you mentioned this. For anyone who dosen't know, T.O.R.A. is one organization fighting hard to protect our river. Anyone interested can donate to them to help with the fight. Myself along with many or/all of its members put in to donate $285 on behalf of High Plains Off Road. If anyone is interested I can get more info on T.O.R.A. and what they do.

Edit: Texas Off Roaders Association (TORA)

I donated to TORA year before last & did not see any thing else about them untill this year.Im glad they are still fighting for our offroading rights

I saw on the news that the river saw a estimated 20,000 people this last weekend.

It was cool to meet up with friends old & new for some good wheeling. I saw some awsome trucks in action & I am already planning for some mods before next year.

I wish I could have seen the fastest mud truck in these parts run in the big class...... I raced in the 38+ class sat night & I was by far the smallest dog in the big-dog kennel I was chosen to run last (in a class of about 20) so i was just there to have fun

Thanks to zach & James for letting me drag my junk around with them while they did some crawlin'
Yes i got stuck in camp and had to take the strap from Zack(first thing in the morning )
Just to show my foolishness
Not stuck....having a blast

stuck.....seems i forgot how 4wd works

For ya'll that have hydro steering i give ya'll a cause i tried driving zach scout with it and it was not something i could drive right off the back. i would have to learn all over again with driving with hydro. then again the first time i drove zach scout with hydro was on that trail when we was already halfway on the trial on the hard part!! SO i guess my inexperience and the scout's advance setup worked against me when I got to drive the scout since i didn't make it up it.
I would put up what happened on the second day but they pretty much told everything i can think of.

Oh i got some pics of catfish stuck,

don't we all wish we had one of these to pull us out, hell i want one just to drive!!

One of those truck was a truck i wanted to copy for a future project, also ya'll tha seen this one run just how did it do?? i was tempted to ask the fella if i could ride with him to see how it acted but never got a chance to.

this one didn't use a body lift it was welded directly to te frame. the other one it was grey had a 12 in body lift. i didn't want to do that at all.

well here are the other 50 pics i have, i got 60 more to go so maybe tommorrow i will have them all done with.

hey evan that first pic is when you went across the river when that bronco was challenging you. then he went across it and back across. i remember him talking about it, when i told him i was looking for something like that he goes how much you got, i was like i am looking for one but can't buy one now but i got 2 dollars!! i knew since he did the river crossing his value of his truck just went sky high, the way he was talking.
either way here is the pic of the bronco that did it.

if i am right that is a 78 since it has the round headlight, it seems to me that the 78 had round headlight and the 79 had square headlight am i right bronco gods??

i ain't looking for a 1 ton setup wes, i plan on staying with the 9in and 44 dana. He said it had a 351W, not sure on the tranny but i was wanting the c6 with np205 transfer case. that is te setup i want.
I don't want to bash in a nice bronco so it will be a light duty vech. i would build a heavy duty trial rig for everything else.
