A&M Off-Road June '09 Trip to Colorado

Well, we are back in the land of Tejas finally (and I am almost caught up on my sleep). I will try to get a better report up on this post later when I have a bit more time. Here are some pictures and videos though for now.

Here is a good bunch (i.e. lots) of pictures from Doug Krebs.

http://picasaweb.google.com/DougKreb...16200990722274

http://picasaweb.google.com/DougKreb...rado2009Part2#

What do you do when you have magnesium H1 runflats left over from your build???
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQUXGssBBPU

The view from the crapper we brought along (and that was given in tribute to the firegods before we left out).

Day 1 of Wheeling
Wheeler Lake
(Pictures to come)

Day 2 of wheeling
Carnage Canyon (Buena Vista)

The exit. It was crazy. Everyone pulled rope on their winch for this one. A couple of us might have made it but it ended up getting dark on us in a hurry. We didn't make it back to camp until midnight almost.

Day 3 of Wheeling
Iron Chest Mine

The boulder garden was pretty good at the entrance, then it turned into a few switchbacks all the way up the mountain. Some spots were pretty tight for my fullsize. Once we got to the top, there was still a bit of snow, and the first rig (a blazer on tons) got a bit light in the rear and had to winch across the first drift. It may not look bad, but he was in a bad way in a hurry right there.

An old cabin on the trail.

Watch for falling rocks....

Close to the top (about 12,000 feet)

Wish I coulda came out to play, buggy is going through another round of upgrades. That exit at carnage is gettin pretty knarly from what I've heard. Was no cake walk last time I was there but heard it's gotten even worse, or better depending on how you look at it I guess.

Looks good. I'll be hitting up Carnage Canyon next month (have to make sure I get another winch by then it looks), then Holy Cross, Montrose and Ouray.

When I get my laptop and green bag back I'll post pictures and get the final costs. If anyone bought water (ed) or something else the group needed let me know and I'll add those in.

I had a great time. All seems like a blur to me. Everything worked out great in the end.

Would be awesome to make this a yearly trip somehow, but maybe later in the summer? There is so much to do there that there is something for everyone.

I don't know why, but this is my favorite one of the bunch. I guess it's because it looks so much lower for some reason.

You will definitely need a winch, the exit is ridiculous.

If you haven't been, someone has gone through and drilled and set in D-rings to winch to.

We checked out the exit last year from the top of Chinaman Gulch, we took a couple borrowed jeeps though and didn't want to bash them. Game on this go around!

If y'all go again next year we'll have to coordinate trips.

Sounds like a plan, we are already trying to nail down dates for the trip. We definitely will be taking a whole week this time though. That drive is just a biatch to do and get folks back to work on Monday by driving straight through.

We generally try to go toward the end of July, most of the snow is gone by then, if you wait til August it seems you run into the rainy season. We do a 9 day trip to include 2 weekends. We've driven straight thru before, but you end up wasting a day anyway cause you're so dang tired.
