MegaRun 09

Went to Mega Run and had a great time. Thanks to the DFW chapter for putting this event on and pulling us up the hill and showing us 1st timers how to get back to camp on Friday. Autolube (53 Willy) and I had a great time and met some really cool people. Hope to see all of you again soon!

All I have to say is WOW this turned out to be a extremely long weekend!!!! Stared out friday hit the first trail Old town Trio everyone in our group made it to the top just fine. Once there noticed a hole in my buddies radiator. So we had to cut out some fins and pinched off the rows that were leaking. Next it was about a hour before dark so we decided to keep riding and we hit up houston creek. My buddy with a 85 blazer on 2.5 ton and 46's came around the corner at the top of the first hill and he was just in front wheel drive to make the turn well he only has a rear pinion brake and it just didnt hold the truck. Basically it just slide down the hill hit a tree and put him on it side. With him blocking the trail I had to go to the end of houston creek and come from the other end. Well on the way I was almost to him and I was having a hard time with my steering. I was coming down a hill and the truck slide into a tree and got wedge between my left rear tire and my rock slider so I couldnt go forward or backwards. So I just left it there and went and helped to get the blazer back on all fours. When he hit tree it bent his link bar on the left front and in the process bending the frame and actually breaking part of it. So we ended up working on that until 11 that night but got it rollin again.

Started out saturday with houston creek I got to the bottom of the first hill, came back up, and started to go back down and just couldnt turn. I just went back to camp and decided the new pump that was on it was shot. I happened to have a extra pump with me but did not have a pulley puller. So I ran got one and came back and got the pump swapped out and working great. By this time it was time to go do the obstacle course and rock garden. We decided to go the rock garden first. A friend with a suburban on one tons and 44's decided to go first. All I can see is he gave it hell and ended up on his lid by the end of the course. He had a few bounces and everytime he bounced he ended up a little furth on the left side so it was leaning pretty bad and he is turning right to try to stay on the course and hit a big rock and rolled him right over. Then it was my turn and managed to get all the way to the BIG rock at the end and I was decided it looked like the best line was gonna be right over the middle. Well it turned out I was just a little bit to long for that. I ended up getting hung up on my t-case and the rear crossmemer for the rear one link. In the process it broke my front trac-bar that controls axle wrap and a tie bolt on my left leaf spring. Luckily we was able to just winch it right off the course pretty easily. Got it back to the camp and worked on it until about 5 and finally was ready again. Since we didnt really get to ride at all yet we decide to go hit DeWoody first. My buddy in the blazer on 46's made it up it. He had to back up and bump it a few times but made it. I got up there and just couldnt get the right line with my width so I had to winch and the suburban had to winch. We went and rode a couple easy trails after that and called it a night.

Sunday the plan was to do the King of the hill and go hit Weenie world, weenie world ext, and scorpion pass. The trail they picked for the event had some tight turns and one spot with some narrow trees. The suburban went first. It started out going down Saturday night live. It has a pretty good drop off on it too. When the burban was coming down the hill he broke a tie bolt and so the leaf springs were all out of whack and in the crooked. He was able to keep going though. He had some trouble in the turns and had to back up a few times and got to the end and finished up. When I was lined up I kind of had a game plan for the coarse and it worked great. Basically leave it in 4wd to go down the hill and then once at the botton unlock the rear so I could make my turns. I made all the turns perfect without backing up. There was a creek that you drove down into and on the way back up I had to put it back in 4wd and there were two tree close together and I just couldnt fit between them. So I had to find a altrenate route and was finally able to get through and finish the course. If I could of fit between those two trees I think it would of been a really good run. Also before we even heading to the king of hill I noticed a big cut in the side of my tire and it started leaking. So I didnt all of it with a flat tire. By the time I got done with that the tires was just about ready to come apart so we called it a weekend.

Basically to sum it up we worked on junk all weekend and ran about 4 trails. About one of the worst wheelin trips I have been on. But I guess you have to have one from time to time. Also to top all of this off when I got hing up on the tree it pretty much trashed the side of my bed I just put back on, then when I got wedged in between the tree it bent the right front fender all to hell and back, and I noticed that my frame is bent on the passenger side beside the motor.

Damn man sorry to hear about all the bad luck. I could tell you were not haveing a good day when we rode up Sat. at you camp. All end all we had a decent weekend. There was way too many rigs on the trails and way too dusty. We only hit a few trails the entire time we were there. We ran Weenie world, some of us ran the ext, then we went over to DeWoody and walked it, and then we went over to Scorpion to work on it for a while. Since I was there the weekend we spent a lot of time watching some of the better trials. I've got some pics but I forgot my camera in the PIG. I'll post them up when I head back to East Tx.

Hate to hear the bad time Robert. I had the little sami out cruisin around with Monster. Luckily we had gone the weekend before because there were way to many rigs out there to do alot of wheelin. I did manage to make it up weenie world extension twice, went up the center of woody twice and then the left of woody, but the funnest I had all weekend was making it up scorpion pass unassisted! I have tried it before, but always backed down and the weekend was going pretty good, so I hit it a little harder and after a while of working on it I finally beat it! All in all I had a pretty good time...

I had a pretty good weekend. I finished the K5 about 6am friday and we headed out to gilmer. Didn't wheel any Friday, but spend all day Sat on the Trails. Broken tail light, crushed rear quarter panel and a dented rocker/door was the only carnage i had. Over all a great weekend.

It was nice to meet everyone. Cheers!

Check out our Chapter site for pics of the weekend. So far there are about 250 pics posted in the gallery.

Randy, I saw you and autolube out there and kept meaning to run by and say hi. Guess I will have to another time. That 53 looks awesome. For tyhe King of hill they went backwards down Saturday Night then hook it over and went up L&B Turnpike. This gave a good drop off and a great climb. The turn were tight so small rigs did well. Most of the larger ones needed to back up once or twice to turn.

What sucked about my run on the king of the hill is that I made all the turns PERFECT and didnt have to back up once. I just couldnt fit between the trees coming up the out of that creek and ended up having to back up and go around. I think I would have a really good run if I could of fit between the trees.

Yeah I think you told me that at the top. Problem is, they were big trees and hurt when you hit them. I smacked one on the side and bounced through them. My tires barely squeezed through. Did you loose a tire on it?

The tire was flat before i even started!! The sidewall cracked saturday night on DeWoody and by sunday morning was flat. I tried putting air in it but it was leaking out as fast as it was going in.

It was a 60 seconds time limit. The fastest was 35 seconds. You remember the Hard Taco toyota on the front of crawl mag a while back. Well a local guy owns it and he is the one that got first. 2nd place was the old green PSC buggy. Another local bought it for his 15 year old daughter. We call them the celebrities in this area. Right where the suburban rolled over he was right at 55 seconds or so. I got to the BIG rock at the end and I timed out right where I broke on the big rock.

Had a great time at Mega Run. Saw some familiar rigs. But, always seemed to be heading in the other direction. The Jeep did great as far as the drivetrain is concerned. Engine is really powerful. The 5 to 1 lowrange worked really well with the 4:56 gears. The rear suspension was way too soft with the coil springs. I am going to install some 2 1/2" Sway-A-Way air shocks on the rear. I won a $200 GC from Superlift. Gonna put some new Blackdiamond 3 1/2" leaf springs on the front.
Gonna try to make Texas Twister the last weekend in May.
See ya'll later.
