River Bash '05

First of all, I would like to say that I HATE mud and there was lots of it. It rained off and on all weekend and before we even got there. It definitely made things interesting.

Day 1: Me and Cody got to the river at about 10:30 friday night. Evan was already there. We unloaded and headed out for some night wheeling. We followed a few trails and splashed through a few mud holes until I lost steering due to the steering shaft slipping on the orbital shaft. I tried tightening it up, but only ended up stripping out the bolt. Cody got a ride back to the truck and just happened to find a bolt that was barely long enough. And of course, while Evan and I waited for them to get back it started pouring rain. They finally made it back and we tried to fix it. I tightened the bolt as much as I could, but it still wasnt enough. Luckily it would grab once in a while and I was able to limp it back to camp. On the way back the rain in my eyes was so bad that I could barely see. We called it a night and attempted to dry off.

Day 2: Me and cody woke up just before 7, which wasnt by choice as we'd only had about 4 hours of sleep. We headed into town to pick up some parts to fix my steering and some food and raincoats. Shortly after James (Gorilla) arrived and we headed back out to the trails after getting the scout fixed. On the way back to the hills we hit a mud hole that gave us some trouble. I got into some ruts and couldnt get out of them after several attempts of backing up. I finally just gave up and let the scout scream through the mud hole. In the process me and cody got completely covered in mud and water. It wasnt too fun, but I put on a good show. After washing off in the river the best we could we headed up into the hills to ride some trails.

We did a couple easy trails then did one with a ledge about 3 or 4 ft. tall. My friend Mike went first in his built jeep. He had some trouble with the obstacle, but eventually made it with some help from the horses under the hood. I went next and made it up with a few attempts. James went next, but after several attempts and on the verge of rolling backwards a couple times pulled out the winch line and took a hit to his pride. (Last trip I had a difficult time with it and he made it look easy.) Mike tried it again, but couldnt make it after James made the ledge taller. Cody asked if he could try it in the scout and I let him. Right at the start he gave it too much gas and rammed the driver's spring into the ledge and bent it. We took a litte break and got my spring straightened out and uninverted the shackle. We headed back to camp to do some repairs while the others did some more wheeling. I ended up clamping my homemade tire spoon to the top of the spring pack with a piece of chain and a bolt. It worked out pretty well and I couldnt even tell it was there. It even took several hard hits while going down hill with no brakes.(story to come below)

After getting the scout fixed once more we headed out to wheel on the other side of the bridge with James in the lead. We went down some trails that were very slick from the rain. Evan's friend in his mildly built rubicon ended up sliding into a washout and couldnt get out. After James winched him out sideways we made our way back to camp. Me and cody fixed some lunch and cleaned up camp. (picked up the trash left by other people ) At some point James went off and got stuck nose first in a ravine. I pulled him back far enough so he could get turned around. Instead of taking the easy way out he gave the 454 a good workout and made it up the hill after several attempts.

Afterwards we watched some idiot in a CJ who'd been sipping on the feel good juice attempt to drive up a washout on another side of the ravine. He tried it many times while we watched and "encouraged" him. In the process he bent both front leaf springs and had the pinion pointing at the ground under load several times. Finally, he listened to some other guys and took the easier way up. He was almost out of it and for some reason decided he was going to go up the wall to his right. With some more encouragement he got the jeep stuck in the washout and was unable to get out. After getting pulled up the side he turned around and went back in the ravine. He then attempted to go up the hill where James came up. After a few times of trying to make it up, we finally heard the pop of carnage that we'd been waiting for. Amazingly the pinion ujoint held up, he either broke a driver's side hub or axle shaft. That was finally enough for him to give up and go back to camp.

After the other groups headed out we decided to make our way back to camp. This is when things really got interesting and I nearly soiled myself. I let cody drive since he wanted to, I figured he couldnt do too much harm. I jokingly said to Evan and James to follow and pick up the parts; little did I know it almost wasnt a joke. Right as we started down hill Cody hollered out "no brakes". The only thing I could think was to hold on and prepare to roll. About a quarter of the way down I slammed the tranny into reverse and killed the engine in the process. Luckily cody got the engine started by the time we got halfway down and got it stopped. We got out and found that the brakes failed because of a front brake line that somehow got cut (I still havent figured out how it happened). I got in to "drive" the rest of the way down and the adventure started all over again but we eventually got down safely. After settling down a bit we headed to town to get a new brake hose then turned in early.

Day 3: We got up and fixed the brake hose while Evan loaded up and took his blazer home so he could come back and haul his friends broken jeep back.

After getting the brakes bled me and cody headed off towards the hills to hit a few trails. It had rained most of the night and the road was really nasty. We did a few obstacles on the way and continued on. Even though I tried to avoid it, We got muddy once again. Once again I got into some ruts I couldnt get out of and got into a hole that was a little more than my bald 36s could handle. I went into some deeper ruts and stopped going forward. I tried to back out but only moved about 6 inches and no more. I finally had no choice but to make the 345 scream and try to go foward. We finally got out of it while working the tires back and forth but my pants and hair got covered in mud and cody got some on him. We continued on down the road. I knew I should have just turned around, but I didnt know that I would be able to so we went on to the hills where I knew we would be able to.

I went up a trail and back down another while checking the brakes the whole time. lol I would've done more, but I didnt want to risk breaking something and not being able to make it back to camp. I already had something going on in the front axle and I only had 3 wheel drive most of the time. We made it back to camp just as James was backing the blazer off the trailer.

We wheeled the other side of the bridge with James for a while before loading up. It was pretty uneventful, although the mud and water made things interesting. It made a normally simple rock climb impossible for both of us to climb.

Over all, with all the good, bad, and excitement, we had a great time and look foward to doing it again. Evan and James are great guys and know how to have fun.

Carnage list:
Me
Bent leaf spring
slipping steering shaft
broken shock mount
something in the front axle, possibly broken welds on the spider gears
front brake hose
soiled underwear and creased seats

Evan
broken flange bolts on front driveshaft

Forgot to say that we didnt get any pics due to the rain. I wish we could have.

From now on I think I will carry a disposable underwater camera with me for times like these.

I dont mind a little rain to settle the dust and to create a few good mud holes, but I dont like having mud everywhere. It was so bad that we couldnt even set up our tent, even under the bridge.

What made the heep really stand out to me...

Each corner was fully adjustable: to level it out in offcamber situations.
I saw him "squat" the whole thing 4 or 5 inches
he could also raise the whole thing several inches

Fuelie SBC-sounded nice
Front & rear 9" buisness.....front was a 1 off 9" inner/60 outer whatchamacallit

Has to have A ton of time & money in that thing......

The engine is a built 400 and tranny is a 700r4. I believe he has ARBs front and rear and I think the tires are 38s. Dont remember much else about it.

To much fun

Need to do this again.
That was a good time.
Afterwards, it took 2 hours at the car wash and another 3 at the house trying to get all the dirt and mud out, of the inside of my rig. That hill climb put more dirt in my rig than on it. I was washing out golfball and raquetball size rocks.
Thanks to Evan for riding along, Cody, Zach, and Mike.
for the line and getting my junk out.
Carnage list:
Hurt pride,
Dented what little sheet metal I have left
Ruined a can of cope
1 coil wire
And mud covered tools.
James.
