Tree's Ranch Labor Day 2007

Well this is the trip we have been waiting for since we got back from Gilmer in July. I just knew it was going to be a great wheeling weekend. Don and I headed out of Beaumont at 6:41 am on Friday morning. We made our usual stops for fuel and food. At our second stop in Comfort we find Stouttrout's tow rig and vehicle parked in the middle of the parking lot. He says he was catching up on sleep because apparently he hadn't got enough the night before. We grab a bite to eat and then start heading West. The next stop was Tree's Ranch. As I said earlier we have been waiting for this trip. After I built my buggy there were a few bugs I had to work out and I was anxious to really test it out. As soon as we got there at about 2 p.m. we got all of our gear unloaded and were ready to head out and I'll be darned if it didn't start raining. We sat at camp a little while and then Stouttrout and I decided to head out and see what kind of trouble we could get into. A few minutes after we left it started raining again so we turned around and headed back to camp. Bob finally arrived so we decided to go get squared away on the registration stuff. About 5 p.m. Don, myself, and Stouttrout headed to the trails. Stouttrout had some unfinished business with the lathe so that's where we headed. Since it had just finished raining we knew that we weren't gonna be able to do some of the more challenging trails but that didn't really stop us from trying. I took off and figured I would go right up the 2nd bypass at Widowmaker, that attempt was unsuccesful as it was just too darn wet, I didn't even try the 1st bypass because you could tell it was pretty slippery. I felt I had enough throttle to make it but not enough traction.
So we decide to take the Waterfalls trail to the Bowls/Lathe. When we got off the waterfall trails Stouttrout had to make a few adjustments to his power steering but he rapidly resolved that issue and we were off again. We played around in that area for a while and about 7 p.m. we decided to head back to camp. On the way back I was feeling froggy and decided to go try Hangover Hill since I was denied on that trail back in May at Texas Twister. On the way there we ran into a group of guy's from corpus. One of them named Maverick also had a BTF Buggy. We get to Hangover Hill and I go for it first. No such luck, but I did manage create quite a smoke cloud from burning down those 42" TSL's. Next up was Don, another unsuccessful attemp. I think he may have got further up on the 2nd ledge but a failed attempt is a failed attempt. Maverick was next and he fought with it for a while and finally his front passenger tire grabbed and he was able to make it up the second ledge. In case you don't know the trail, it's not over after you finish the second ledge there is still some challenge the rest of the way up. Well after Maverick made it half way up his passenger tire goes flat and the sidewalls get tore up bad enough that they couldn't hold air. So we winch him up the rest of the hill and he decides to drive it all the way back to camp.
The next morning turned out to be pretty and it was drying out pretty good so Don, myself, Stouttrout and Rick head to the back of the property to hit some of the trails out there. I was trail leader so my plan was to hit the left side of Turkey Run and take the scenic route to Skidmark. Turkey run turned out to be quite a challenge because the ground was still saturated. Once we got everybody up we took th elong version of Skidmark. That trail was pretty tough but we all finally made it up. After that it was about lunch time so we headed toward the bottom to grab a bite to eat. The sun was shining and everything was drying out nicely so we head back over to Hangover Hill. I went right up it with no problems as did Don, Stoutrout and Rick. I actually did it twice. The second time just to get it on video. From there we headed to Widowmaker none of the bypasses were very challenging at all. The one thing I've learned about the bypasses is you can't crawl them you have to gently put pressure on the throttle and get up them bad boys. Rick went over and played around on Widowmaker for a while with no success. As I was on top of the bypass I was really scoping out the Widowmaker and I kept telling myself "that don't look too bad" so I drove around and figured I would give it a go. Once I got up to the point where my front wheels were on the top ledge I figured I had one of two choices; Let er' rip or back down it with my tail between my legs. I chose the latter. Man that thing is steep at the top. After we played around there for a while we headed over to Mighty Mouse. That was my first time on that trail and there are some pretty tall ledges. It took us a while but we all finally made it up successfully. At that time it was probably about 2 p.m. and I wanted to head back to Slingblade. Everything was fine until we made it to that top ledge. Instead of having a winchfest we all decided to turn around and go hit one of the scenic trails. This is where my carnage incurred. A dented hood and a tore up softtop from just turning around. I am so embarrased. Well anyway, we got to the bottom of Slingblade and off in the distance we heard thunder. "Great", I said here comes the rain. We figured we'd take the Meandering Trail back to camp and hopefully we could beat the rain. As we got back to the beginning of the trail (or the end, I guess it just depends which way you are going) you could see the rain coming, so we decided to head back to camp the regular way. We made it back just in time to watch it pour down for about an hour. All of our gear got soaked so we figured we'd pack up and just head home. Dan, Chris and Scott stayed for the next day and said it turned out pretty nice. Maybe they can add some to what I have already posted. Here are a few pics.

Hey Monster Dude,

We missed ya. Landis, Ron, Nathan and myself all played in the mud. Your pig would have been a happy little piggy.

I had a blast even when the rain was coming down. Next time I will definitely take some rain gear with me. I could barely see where I was going most of the way back to camp.
