banks duramax dragster 7 sec 1/4 mile pass. 1300 hp. not a single puff of smoke.

black smoke is wasted fuel.

TX85K5 just gettin started
Gale gets it done (efficiently burns the fuel) by throwing a tone of nitrous at it.

Pulling trucks have to light those big turbos (sans nitrous), and it's tough to get them to spool without hitting them with a ton of fuel.

For street-driven trucks with smallish turbos, the black smoke is mostly just a case of poor and/or lazy tuning (or is just flat-out intentional). They can usually be spooled rather well without getting too rich.
