Fire victim help

I want to start this out by first making it clear that I am in no way benefitting from this post. I'm also not looking for anyone to put themselves out in any way. I'm only asking for things that might be laying around or being trashed anyway.

I am a teacher in Bastrop, where many of you know we just experienced a devistating wildfire. One of my students could use a little help. I hesitated to reach out to this community because I know I am not a major part of it and yall don't owe me or this student anything, but I also know that the people on this board are good people and often come across deals that could help. Here's the story. .... This student was one of the rare cases of a house in the burn area that did not get destroyed by the fires. The fire crews were able to save his family's house and belongings, and this should be the great news. Unfortunetly not. Less than a week after the fire was removed as a danger for their house, worthless pieces of **** came by and purposefully set fire to their house. They lost everything. Including the pickup you see in the photo below. That pickup is why I am reaching out. My student purchased the pickup from one of his uncles and it meant the world to him. He drove it daily and only left it behind because of the forced evacuation. This was a rather rare cab and a half 3/4 ton 4x4 chevy. I am unsure of the year, it was a late '70 early '80 model though. He has sworn to rebuild the pickup though, his emotional bond to it is just too strong.

On my part, I am giving him the TBI 350, TH350, and NP203 out of my Jeep project. With it he'll be getting the computer and wiring for the TBI and the complete exhaust system (headers, mufflers, ect.) I am only asking if anyone has parts laying around that can be used in getting him a little further along. Again, I am not asking or expecting anyone to give away something they had plans on selling, but I know many of us have little things laying around that are not doing us any good and have little value. As you can see, he needs almost everything. When I told him I would give him my motor and things, the usually very reserved young man broke down. I know any help will be appreciated.

Yall can contact me on here through PM, or email me at [email protected].

Again, I want it clear that this in no way benefits me. I just know how much the truck meant to the young man and I would very much like to see him get it back on the road again.

I dont have any 80's parts, but... that truck appears to be toast. There is a clean 2WD truck like that for sale outside of rockdale. I'll see how much they want next time i drive through.

I'm working on a 80's chevy truck. I don't have a whole lot of extra stuff but I might be able to give you some stuff.

I beleive that is a custom built truck. As far as I know Chevy and GMC didn't build extended cab untill the next body style, 87 88. I am in Clovis so don't know what I can do from here. If you were closer I do have some parts that would fit.

chevy or gmc might not have built them, but there are a bunch of them around here. so there might have been some conversion company that did it. those are hard to find trucks.

I have a stock 4wd steering box out of my '72. I headed to burnet next weekend (23rd) if that helps any. Also I'll be in Amarillo in November if he's still looking for parts then that are further away. I'll scrounge around to see what other parts I have. Rastus has a nice set of tires he could donate from his jeep

I have this setting in the way im willing to give to a wheeler in need. Solid truck to start with. Needs a motor/trans/tcase but the body is mostly rust free/dent free minus the driver door. Has an 8inch superlift on it, all the steering and brand new break lines are all there.

Ryan, Don't be passing your Curse on to someone else
J/k

Definitely would be a great start if he decides the truck is to just to far gone..

I wish I could help out.. But I've always been a ford guy..anything and everything I have is for fords..

I'd be willing to wrench, or parts run if its in the area and people just don't have time to run up the New Braunfels...

That truck I'm afraid is prolly not salvagable. All the wheels are melted which means that thing got hottttt. Every bushing and rubber on that thing is gone. All of the painted metal is bear and is going to rust before the water gets hot.

I can't thank everyone enough for the support they are showing and the very kind offers. I was not expecting this level of a responce by any means. I am going to go out and look at the pickup tomorrow and either try to build a parts list or at least determine if it is salvageable and worth the effort. I will let everyone know what I discover once I can get back to the computer. Thank you all again.

Look like the body can be salvaged but with that kind of heat the frame is likely not safe any more. Salvage what you can, get a new top welded on and rust proof the whole thing. Heat will mess tin up bad.

I looked at the pickup. The body can be salvaged with some work, mostly just needs a new roof, but the frame is gone. The heat caused the entire thing to twist. I thank everyone for their help and offers, but talking to my students, it looks like they are just going to put some rollers under it and store it aside for a while. He is about to leave for college and they feel his money and time are better served trying to buy a vehicle he can rely on to get him to and from school. He says he plans to build the pickup again one day, but for now it will just have to be pushed aside. Thanks again for everyone's quick responces and willingness to help. Hopefully something more will come along that we can use our resources for.

As for the question about their needs. The family is still one of the fortunate ones. Their insurance is going to replace the house and everything in it, but it won't be replacing any vehicles or outside equipment. So they are good as far as household items go.

Sorry to hear that. I suggest he has the shot with a coat of sealer. It will rust fast now that the pores of the steel are oxygenated.
