Toyota tranny

I have a friend that just got a 79-1/2 Totota truck. He needs a 4 speed tranny for it. Anybody have any ideas? Can any other tranny be used instead?

He would have a L43(4 speed) Like me. I beleave a L45 (5 speed) is the same length as the l43 that came in 81 and 82 toyotas truck/4 runners. That would be your best bang for the buck. 83 on up the trannies are a little longer which you will have to modify a few things..driveshafts.speedo cable. cross member. He would need to take the tranny with bell housing, pitch fork and slave cyl. from the donor vehicle. might as well snag the speedo cable as well.
The L43 is the odd ball of the family.....nothing else really can work with the bell housing.

I'll let him know. A 5 speed would be nice if the 4 speed is hard to find.

id go with a 5 speed. if its trail only any of them will work. the cream of the crop is the w56 or a turbo tranny r151 i think. they have the lowest first gear and apparently are the strongest
