winches

I'm needing two winches, one for my trailer, and one for my trail rig. They can be just about anything, probably not a warn cause they're so darn expensive. Would like a 9K for the trailer and a 12K for the truck, but I will consider anything as long as the price is right.

Well that kinda begs a question. Most of the winches I see on craigslist around here are Warn, and they usually run around 700 for a 8K. I've been looking into bulldog for awhile, and they're about 300 for the same size. Also, theres another one, I forget the name, but its like a 17.5K, for less than 600. So I'm not sure whether to go with a name brand expensive used winch, or spend the same on a new cheapo winch

All I can say is you get what you pay for. I wouldn't be caught dead with a cheapo winch on my trial rig but for a trailer a cheapo should be just fine.

Just my .02

I'll keep an eye out for some good deals on a winch

my buddy has one of those 10,000 gorilla winches that needs a solenoid. I bet he'd let it go cheap cuz he just bought an M8000 Warn. That gorilla winch was plenty to straight line pull my '09 diesel dodge and trailer from the quicksand out in the Canadian.

I'd be interested in it. How many solenoids does it have?

I have never had a problem with my "cheap" winch. (On a FS Blazer.)

It's a Champion (same as MileMarker), and cost $300 at Sams Club.

The only downside to the "cheap" winch, is they tend to be slower. But If your in such a hurry, then you shouldn't have gotten stuck in the first place.

I also carry a snatch block to double the pulling power if necessary.

I believe a winch is for RECOVERY if you get in a jam.

Usually the guys who bash the cheap winches are the ones who use them to drag thier vehicle up/over/through an obstacle that it would never be able to drive through otherwise.

And at $300 each I could put one on the front, one on the back, have another for a spare, and STILL be cheaper than a Warn.

Well that champion should at least work fine on my trailer. I just wanted a winch that would pull up disabled vehicles, blown tires and all

There are deals out there on decent winches but they are getting harder to find. I've always had the big rig of the group so when It came to rig extraction the PIG was always called on. For light trail use and trailer use I would have no problem running a mile marker or any of the other cheaper winches.

That buddy of mine wants to hang on to his winch for another project, sorry I couldnt be of more help. I will chime in on the cheap winches though. I have 5 warn winches. 3-8274s, 1-xd900i, and 1 m-8000, all of which I bought used. I have never had a problem out of any of them, and I use my winches quite bit. The guy with the gorrilla winch just bought a used warn 8000 for $300 on ebay(w/new synthetic line), and my other buddy here in sunray that has the smitty 8000 has only used it 10 times or less is already hunting a new/used warn for a good deal. His smitty burned out a control pack on its second pull. IMHO at least for your trail rig pony up the extra couple of hundy and get at least a used USA made winch, you will thank yourself in the long run.
